A smoke advisory went into effect for the surrounding areas of Tumon, Tamuning and Harmon.

Guam - The Guam Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that broke out Saturday afternoon in the Harmon Industrial area that could be seen from miles around the island.

The fire erupted around 4:25 pm Saturday behind Black Construction inside Harmon Industrial Park, according to GFD Spokesperson Cherika Chargualaf. From miles away and shared all over social media, this black smoke could be seen billowing from the area as firefighters spent 30 hours putting out the blaze.

Chargualaf says a smoke advisory was put into effect because of possibly hazardous industrial chemicals burning into the air. According to GFD Chief Joey San Nicolas, it appears as though the incident started out as a grass fire that spread to the FSM scrap yard. But an official investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause.
